Application of Simulation Support Tools in Control System Design of FACTS Apparatus

-The paper presents an overview of two recently developed simulation support tools, namely the optimization tool and the sensitivity analysis tool, and demonstrates their use for tuning and analyzing the control system of a static compensator (STATCOM). The optimization tool is used for adjusting the gains and time constants of the control system in order to improve the transient behavior of the STATCOM. The impact of phase lags introduced by the measurement and filtering elements on the control system performance is then investigated using the sensitivity analysis tool.
